Overview
HELP USA is seeking a dedicated Safety Officer to join our team at the Clarke Thomas transitional housing shelter located on Wards Island, New York. As a Safety Officer, you will play a crucial role in maintaining a secure and welcoming environment for men living with diagnosed mental illnesses. Your proactive approach to safety will be essential in ensuring that residents feel safe and supported during their stay.
Key Responsibilities
As a Safety Officer, your primary responsibilities will include:
Ensuring Resident Safety
You will be one of the first contacts residents meet upon entering our facility. Your vigilance and attentiveness are vital to establishing a safe atmosphere. You will conduct regular patrols of the facility and its surrounding grounds, ensuring that both residents and guests adhere to safety protocols.
Monitoring Access and Conducting Inspections
Part of your duties will involve managing access to the shelter. This includes signing in residents and guests, escorting visitors to their designated areas, and conducting thorough safety inspections of the premises. These actions help create a secure environment, essential for the well-being of everyone involved.
Documentation and Reporting
Accurate documentation is a critical aspect of the Safety Officer role. You will maintain detailed records of incidents, safety inspections, and any other relevant activities. Preparing incident reports when necessary will also fall under your responsibilities, ensuring that any safety concerns are appropriately documented and addressed.
Building Relationships
Establishing strong relationships with residents is essential. As a Safety Officer, you will set a welcoming tone that encourages residents to feel comfortable and safe. Your customer service skills will be crucial in fostering positive interactions and addressing any concerns that arise.
Qualifications
To be considered for the Safety Officer position, you should possess the following qualifications:
- New York State Security Guard License: A valid security guard license is required for this position.
- FDNY F-02 Certification: You must obtain this certification within 30 days of hire if you do not already possess it.
- Educational Background: A High School Diploma or equivalent experience is required.
- Experience: At least one year of security experience is preferred, ideally within homeless services or residential facilities.
- Interpersonal Skills: Strong relationship-building and customer service skills are essential for success in this role.
- Technical Skills: Computer literacy with Microsoft applications is necessary for documentation and reporting tasks.
- Bilingual Abilities: Bilingual (English/Spanish) candidates are preferred to better serve our diverse resident population.
- Availability: The ability to provide night and weekend coverage as needed is crucial.
